Chapter 67: Rushuna

Rushuna's personality was childlike and fun-loving. It seemed that Artemis had derived her from one of the animation shows she had watched before. Even the way she reloaded was exactly the same. There would probably be more from animations she had watched before. If this was indeed the Rushuna from that animation, she would fight not to kill, but disarm. We were now running around another floor, trying to find the other elevator. This floor was a maze! Suddenly, I sensed someone behind me. Rushuna laid a hand on my shoulder. "You sense him too? This is a big one." She smiled. Smiling in the face of danger......

A dull thumping sound was resonating through the corridor. I gripped Artemis's Buster Sword tightly. Rushuna jolted her chest and brought her revolvers around. "I forgot I'm out of ammo......" She scratched her head with her tongue out. Seriously...... We began to run. Suddenly, a group of guards appeared in front of us, wielding submachine guns. Rushuna jumped and caught one around the neck with her legs, grabbing his gun and emptying the bullet cartridge into her bosom. She did the same with a few more guards while I set about deflecting the bullets and kicking them. Kon was stabbing guards left and right with his dagger.

As expected, Rushuna didn't kill anyone, she just disarmed them and stole their ammunition. On the other hand, she was rather upset when she saw the guards Kon and I had killed, and refused to take their ammunition. "Do you know the ultimate battle strategy? It is to extinguish the opponents will to fight without fighting." She said sadly. "To accomplish this, one must bare oneself." She added. "You mean getting naked?" Kon gaped. I smacked him on the head. "Show a smile, and embrace that person tightly into your bosom." Rushuna smiled. By now, I was seriously spooked. Kon had a weird look on his face. I smacked him again. "You say that and yet you shot those monsters dead?" I asked. "The bloodlust in their eyes...... they can't be human." She explained grimly.

The footsteps from behind were slightly louder now. Rushuna was reloading her revolvers with the stolen ammunition normally and Kon was shaking nervously. "We need to get to the elevator!" I shouted and turned a corner. "What the!?" I gasped. It was a dead end. "The maze floor is supposed to be right before Fidelo's penthouse. We're close." Kon said, still shivering. He was probably scared. The heavy footsteps were closing in too. Rushuna had a finger on her lips and looked like she was thinking. I started tapping on the wall, trying to find an exit of some kind. "We need to move." Rushuna said and aimed her revolvers at a wall. She sealed the Ice revolver and put it in her weapons pocket. She squeezed off 6 shots into the wall, then took some bullets from her bosom to reload. The first shot hit the wall, but it was still spinning. The second shot impacted right in the center of the first bullet, and kept spinning. The next few bullets followed suit, and when the sixth bullet impacted, the entire wall cracked. Each bullet multiplied the force of the first bullet. Very nice!

I jump kicked the cracked wall and rebounded onto the opposite wall. The damaged wall couldn't take it any more and disintegrated, revealing the entrance to the elevator room. "Great!" Kon exclaimed and ran in, but Rushuna laid a hand on his shoulder and fired a single shot into the ground. The ground exploded! "Land mines." Rushuna mumbled, then dropped her body to the ground. She seemed to be preparing to jump! "Hup!" She kicked at the ground under her with her legs and flew into the air, landing in front of the elevator neatly. "Awww, it's no good!" She exclaimed and jumped back. "It takes a key card." She pouted. "I'm willing to bet that the key card's on whatever's following us." I said and turned around.

The monster following us was as tall as I was, with horns, scales, claws, practically everything you could imagine as a weapon. Its scales were obviously quite thick, but hopefully my revolvers would be able to shoot through. It roared and charged. For a split second, I had a look at the creature's eyes. Those eyes...... They weren't the eyes of an animal. This was probably a human, turned into a monster by genetic manipulation. I couldn't kill it. As it charged, I vaulted over its back and raised my revolver. My finger quivered on the trigger. I really couldn't...... The monster took advantage of my hesitation to hurl me into a wall. It cracked, but I had hit the wall on all fours, absorbing the impact. It hurt though.

"Shoot it!" Alexis called out. "No..." I got up slowly, my legs hurt. The monster charged towards me. I couldn't shoot him...... I jumped out of the way and one of my legs crumpled. "Argh!" I screamed, the beast had lacerated the side of my arm with a claw. My gun arm too! This wasn't good! I dropped my revolver on the ground and leapt out of the way of another charge. "Stop! Let's talk!" I shouted. The monster paid no heed and charged again. This would require a tricky bit of jumping. Too low or too slow, and I would get hit. Too high or too fast, and I'll miss my chance. I jumped about half a metre into the air just as the monster got within a hair's length of me. I hugged the monster's head into my bosom.

"What the heck!?" I gasped when I saw Rushuna hug the monster's head into her chest. So she WAS serious about what she said earlier...... She was smiling too. To my total surprise, the monster calmed down and even started crying into Rushuna's bosom. She didn't seem to mind that the beast's head was on her chest. What the hell was going on there? Kon was staring at the two of them with his mouth hanging wide open. I noticed a card hanging on the beast's belt and I took it. Rushuna was now patting the monster on the back. "Poor thing......" She whispered.

With the monster under control, I was able to trip all the land mines with a well-placed shot. We proceeded to the elevator door and Alexis slid the card key into the slot. The elevator doors opened and the four of us walked into the elevator. Yes, the poor beast was with us now. It couldn't talk though. It seemed to be staring at Kon most of the time. I took a bottle from my pocket and drank the contents. This was the antidote for the poison. I had bottled it up earlier just to be safe. This beast would surely have channels for its poison running through its claws, horns and etcetera.

The elevator door opened and we stepped out, instantly finding ourselves surrounded by guards armed with submachine guns. "Please let us pass." I smiled at them. They didn't flinch. "I doubt that'll work." Alexis sighed. Hugo Fidelo was standing behind the guards. "Oooh, you have one hot babe with you." He remarked. Alexis and Kon drew tighter to me. I gripped my revolver tighter. This was a man who wanted power above everything else. "Maybe if you come with me, I'll let your friends go unharmed." Hugo smiled ominously. I dropped my revolver on the ground. "Not." Hugo grinned and his men opened fire.

"Duck!" I shouted and dived to the floor, grabbing the beast and Alexis to the floor with me. Kon was nowhere to be seen, and I quickly kicked my revolver into the air and grabbed it, immediately disarming 6 guards. The others kept firing, and I started to spin on the spot. I jolted my chest and sent a few bullets flying out of my bosom, catching them in my revolver's open chamber as I brought it around. Quickly disarming another 6 guards, I broke into a run and rolled head-over-heels. 6 more bullets bounced out of my bosom and off my chest, and again, I caught them in my revolver's open chamber. 6 more guards were disarmed. All of a sudden, Hugo yelled, "Don't shoot!" and the gunfire stopped. Kon was holding his dagger to the man's neck from behind. "Tell me. Where is the genetic engineering lab." He said quietly. "Floor... above..this..." Hugo stammered. "Take me there." Kon whispered.

The armed guards followed us into the elevator, their weapons trained on Kon and me. "Stop those guards." Kon said. "Don't follow me!" Hugo yelled. The guards stopped following us and we rode the elevator up to the next floor. This floor was an expansive lab full of vats and stuff. Most of these items were probably illegal. Hugo led us to a raised platform in the center and Kon let him go. I kept my revolver trained on him, but I knew I couldn't shoot. Hugo pressed a button and a syringe dropped out of an overhead compartment. The second I turned around to look at it, I sensed Hugo moving behind me and shot over my shoulder, effectively disarming him of his weapon. This weapon was a gun with a bottle of green liquid on top. However, my bullet had hit the bottle and the fluid was now leaking out. Onto Hugo himself. His scream almost deafened the entire party.
